About This Spot

Tucked just off Alabama Highway 69, J & B Fish & Barbecue carries the warm, unhurried rhythm of a beloved local retreat. The moment you pull in, a gravel parking lot and a modest, no-frills exterior set the stage for something that feels rooted — a spot where the day’s pace slows just enough to savor simple, honest food. Inside, the worn wooden booths and classic diner-style seating invite you to settle in with no rush, amid the hum of friendly conversations and orders being called out.

This is a place where the comfort lies not in flashy decor, but in the quiet rituals of a family-owned kitchen doing what it knows best. Fried fish arrives with a satisfying crispness, and every plate carries those familiar, home-cooked touches that draw regulars back year after year. The atmosphere pulses with the kind of easy familiarity that makes you feel as though you’re part of a shared local tradition — a spot that encourages lingering over a hearty meal, whether catching up with friends or simply watching the world go by.

The pace here reflects genuine care: dishes may take a little longer, but they arrive thoughtfully prepared, fresh and plenty. This isn’t about speed; it’s about honoring the time and craft behind each order. The staff moves with quiet purpose, friendly but focused, contributing to a grounded, welcoming energy that feels like an unspoken promise — you’ll be well fed, and you’ll feel it.

J & B Fish & Barbecue isn’t just a meal, it’s a small slice of Alabama’s communal spirit. It’s where the smells of fried catfish and smoky barbecue mingle in the air, and where the taste of a well-loved plate carries with it a sense of place — unpretentious, genuine, and just right for anyone who appreciates the comfort of a down-home catch.

Went by local tipoffs for this seafood joint; it did not disappoint! Located right off 69, about 15 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa. It was busy on a late Saturday afternoon, with more folks streaming in as we ate our dinner plates. The fried catfish platter is legit, that nice combination of flaky & flavorful & the fries were perfect. The interior does appear dated & their sign outside could use updating & repairs. Gravel driveway with decent parking space. Customer service was warm. Everyone seemed happy to eat here. Yes, I'd come back here again.

I go here often even though I no longer live as close as I used to. I love eating my whiting fish 3 piece plate while watching Wheel of Fortune there. I was surprised by some of the low star reviews. Their descriptions made me think they have never actually eaten the food or ordered from the staff there. Everyone is nice and about their business and the fish is always perfectly fried!! I’ll see y’all tomorrow.

The good is awesome!! Hot, fresh, and so yummy It's a small place with seating and parking. The parking is a gravel lot, so be careful. U can order food and have it ready when u get there, I would recommend that. It's a family owned business. Because the food is made to order, things can take a while to get out, but it's worth it.

The fish and chicken tenders are phenomenal. The coleslaw is the best I've ever had. It's sweet and wet enough to dip fries in. The portions of food are plentiful. I'd definitely go back!!
